Day 6 Update - The Cursed Library Teaser

I added a section under Expansions describing The Cursed Library expansion and also the final Elaine Cunningham short fiction for The Stygian Society: The Cursed Library.

I'll create an add-on for this expansion just as soon as the cover art is complete - or later this week, whichever comes later!

Scott Almes (The Great Dinosaur Rush) has created an entirely new Stygian Society experience with The Cursed Library.  

The heroes are famous authors trying to fight their way through the Cursed Library in an attempt to defeat the villain who had brought the authors' vilest characters to life. As they progress through the library and defeat foes, they can recruit good characters using ink. These characters will fight on behalf of the heroes, but are just as susceptible to damage, so the heroes must fight wisely as they climb.  

The big change in this module is using ink instead of experience. When an enemy is defeated, the party now controls the book. In the game sense, this means the book is flipped over from the ‘bad’ side to the ‘good’ side, and the players can then take control of the good character by spending ink. These goods characters can help fight, and using them will be critical to bringing the library to order.

Day 4 Update - New Add-Ons Section

Just a short update to say that I created an Add-On section to the project page that lets you add extras into your pledge, like Dark is the Night (which is limited - so hurry!)

I also created a What's New section at the top of the page where you can look to quickly see what's changed on the ever-growing project page as well as see what will be added tomorrow.

I'll close with the Vincent Joubert art for one of the Tower Laboratory main bosses - the mystic.

Day 5 Update - Be the Hero

New pledge levels are open and we're looking for brave adventurers to upgrade their pledge to add their likeness to a base game hero. Specifically, we're looking for people that want to be a:

  • Female knight or doctor
  • Male spellsling or burglar

These levels include both expansions, the hunter hero, all stretch goals and free shipping anywhere in the world.

Note that most of the money for these pledges goes directly to the artist. 

Day 3 Update - 800 Backers and 6 Stretch Goals Unlocked

We're creeping up on $70K and the 7th stretch goal - an alternate mid-boss for the Tower Laboratory expansion. A few words on the expansions - APE commissioned the expansions a while back, and we have had them without art for several months. I wanted to be sure that the project was going to fund before investing too much into the art. I had the heroes, main bosses and cover art for Philip duBarry's Tower Laboratory expansion done before the project started so that we could include that in the initial Kickstarter launch, but there's still a lot more art to do. I waited until after the project launched to start the art for Scott Almes' Cursed Library expansion. I chose for this one to be second since it's a lot more ambitious than Tower Laboratory. I showed you Sir Conan Doyle in yesterday's update. I'd actually received that art only a couple of hours before I made the update and it's the first piece of art that I got for Cursed Library.  I'll provide a lot more details on that expansion and make it available as an add-on as soon as I get the cover art, which the artist is working hard to complete.

Before leaving the topic of expansions, here's the art for The Mechanic hero from the Tower Laboratory. The artist for this expansion is Vincent Joubert (Moa, Via Nebula).

Room Cards and an Upcoming Kevin Wilson Post

I mentioned earlier today (in a comment? on BGG?) that a lot of the genius of the game comes from the rooms and it's hard to appreciate that until you actually play. The enemy interaction, their placement in the room, and the increasing peril effects make each room a unique challenge. Kevin Wilson has offered to do a guest update post where he'll talk about Stygian Society rooms. Expect that in the next couple of days.

Day 2 Update and Hint at Next Expansion

I'd like to give another Keanu Reeves 'whoa!' today, but rather than stopping there, I want to give a hint of a new expansion that we'll announce soon! It's written by Scott Almes, who created The Great Dinosaur Rush for us, and is the designer of the Tiny Epic games (Tiny Epic Mechs is on Kickstarter right now)! Here's one of the heroes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!

This expansion will offer very different gameplay, and I think you'll be pleased with what he's done.

We'll announce this expansion as soon as the cover art is complete, but well before the end of the project so that you can increase your pledge with this add-on.
